Lessons from this Sunrise!

Sarah Hale Folger 112

Another day has risen and it falls to me to wake up to greet this morning.  I don’t know about you, but finding ways to stay optimistic and upbeat in a world so torn by politics, war, and mayhem, is quite a challenge.  For me, I take my breaks from the news, but am drawn back into it so that I have a handle on our country’s pulse.  It is one of the saddest things for me to see the way we are torn apart as a nation, and how the terrorists who hate Americans, and other freedom loving countries, are constantly pursuing their goals of taking us out.  My heart grows heavy as I see bad incidents and angry people dominating the spotlight and feeding us talking points on TV and radio, in print and in conversation. I take it all in and remain true to my heart.  I reach for a higher perspective and am thankful for the true beauty that exists in so many people and it is nature that soothes my soul and helps me cope with all these things.

Sarah Hale Folger 111

Many nights I can’t sleep from the stress of life, whether it be what I mentioned already or finances, people I love who are sick, or hurting, or trying to figure out the problems that constantly arise.  So it is for these very reasons that I make many attempts at soothing myself.  It may be taking in a sunrise or a sunset, and when it is I am always fueled for my day.  It may be removing myself from people for a while and simply creating some form of art, and it may be visiting my children and grandchildren.

Sarah Hale Folger 113

!t’s important in life to learn to sooth yourself, you never know when you may lose the one you lean on for support. There are no guarantees how long we have one another, and that is why I value those few in my life who stay close to my heart.  I honor them by taking care of my own heart and mind, and for me, it is through the arts, through building my business, and by constantly learning and growing as a creative person.

Sarah Hale Folger 114

Imagine how awesome it felt for me to walk out my door and round the corner to see such a magnificent sight as this!  I longed for this sort of beauty my whole life, and am now wise enough to not waste any time finding moments like these!

Sarah Hale Folger 115

I stood in the wet frosted grass and slowly turned in all directions and no matter the view it was intoxicating.

Sarah Hale Folger 116

When do you stop taking pictures?  When it is this beautiful, you are compelled to grasp it, to interpret it, to drink it in, to copy it- it’s insatiable the appetite it creates in my soul!

Sarah Hale Folger 117

As I walked away from this view a few yards, I was keenly aware that this was an original work of art that I was trying to capture. It would never be exactly like this again, never.  If you were to put your foot in a flowing stream and lift it up and place it back down again, it is a different stream of water that rushes over your feet. This is how I think about things, maybe a little too deep for some, but for me I have an intense fascination with how the world works. The lessons of nature for me translate into how I cope with the rest of my life.

Sarah Hale Folger 118

This small boat so tranquil and serene called to me! I simply had to capture this moment even though I was running late on starting my day!

Sarah Hale Folger 119

Yes I stole a few more moments to make sure I had the fuel for my day.

Sarah Hale Folger 120

The sun was cresting, I could see it behind the trees and I knew soon the colors would vanish and soon I would be trotting back to my apartment and rushing to get the day started.

Sarah Hale Folger 121

One last moment, I couldn’t quite tear my eyes away from this gift.  It left me grateful and full of magic in my heart, the kind of magic that nature brings to all of us.  We simply just have to show up! You may not be near the water, you may live in a city or in the middle of the country land locked as I once was.  But the sky will always paint for you just as it does for me.  May you find yourself inspired wherever nature calls to you!

How To Wake Up Your Soul!

The sun will rise each and every day to remind you that each day is brand new and full of infinite potential. As humans I feel we get so caught up on surviving, or just the hustle and bustle of family life, business life, friendships, work, drama etc., that we oftentimes miss the most obvious and powerful fact of living, that is it a magnificent privilege to be alive. When the sun rises, it absolutely is calling us to rise with it!

#sunrises #inspiration #sarahhalefolger #blogger #RIphotography #nature

Notice the fisherman squeezing some time in before the sun even rose to strive for the catch.  What motivates someone to get out of bed and fish before dawn?  Perhaps the heart of a fisherman knows more than most just how much nature holds the key to contentment.

#sunrises #inspiration #sarahhalefolger #blogger #RIphotography #nature

Standing in the presence of darkness being swallowed up in the light I can say, wow, every part of your soul can be awakened in that glorious light!  It’s all about just showing up.  A wise woman once told me that 90% of life is just showing up.  So glad I showed up for this glorious sunrise!

#sunrises #inspiration #sarahhalefolger #blogger #RIphotography #nature

On another morning in East Greenwich RI, I “showed up” for a sunrise on the water but the fog blocked out the sun.  It didn’t matter, the stillness of the morning was mesmerizing.  I love the stillness in the morning before the cars start to flow and the noise becomes static that time when the only sound you hear is the flowing of the water to the current, and the seabirds chiming in with their songs.

#sunrises #inspiration #sarahhalefolger #blogger #RIphotography #nature

This photo below was from this morning.  It was completely foggy and it was hard to see any distance in front of you.  It was almost eerie and slightly seductive to the overactive imagination. It would have been a great morning to write a chapter in a haunting novel.

#sunrises #inspiration #sarahhalefolger #blogger #RIphotography #nature

The sky is forever calling if we would only step aside to answer that call we would be filled with inspiration to fuel our lives.

#sunrises #inspiration #sarahhalefolger #blogger #RIphotography #nature

As the evening was drawing to a close last night I was in Warwick and this was the sky there.

#sunrises #inspiration #sarahhalefolger #blogger #RIphotography #nature

But before the night had finished I found myself at Beavertail in Jamestown.  The great thing about RI is that it is so small and surrounded on so many sides by ocean, that you can enjoy in the same day, a variety of different ocean views.

#sunrises #inspiration #sarahhalefolger #blogger #RIphotography #nature

I just knew I wanted to end this beautiful day at Beavertail. The air was perfect, very little wind, perfect temperature.  I just took it all in with a seriously grateful heart and mind to be living so close to such beauty!

Sarah Hale Folger

The sun rises and it sets, giving two opportunities each day to reflect on the bigger picture of life.  To me, I am reminded that you just never know what a day will bring, but you always have the next sunrise to start it all over again. Striving for beauty and inspiration to weave into the tapestry that is life.

A Sunset For the Soul

I was sitting quietly at my desk in my apartment thinking far too much about things that are beyond my control and wondering what the secret is to balancing life. At the end of the day, you do what can be done in the course of that day.  It’s a joke really, you never finish the list and you do things that weren’t on it. And then it happened.. Nature trumped my overthinking, analyzing brain!  THANK GOD!!!

IMG_0616

I saw bright colors coming through my window and realized while I was contemplating things that were tying my head in a knot, the beautiful sky was painting a beautiful sunset as if to say, Sarah, look what I can do! Come drink in the cocktail I’m brewing!!

IMG_0605

Just like that I ran outside and stood under the sky in wonder!! This is to be celebrated!!! I spent 15 minutes outside and realized, nothing else mattered in that moment!

IMG_0604

Standing under a majestic sky, I had only one response…..THANK YOU!!!! Thank you, God, thank you Universe of majestic proportions!!! Thanks for putting things in order.  I’m so glad I am not a mole, blind and underground. I am so glad that when my striving nature has me buried in a hole, that I can remember, I am not blind! I can remember, and so can you! The sky is calling!

IMG_0609

It reminds me that the bigger picture trumps my greatest efforts by just being what it is, stellar!! The day begins with a sunrise to remind us that each day has unending possibilities of beauty, and each one is different. It’s a fleeting moment that leads to a day of strong sun, or clouds or rain or snow or sleet or who knows what? There are so many possibilities! We cannot control one bit of it, only what we choose to do during that time.

IMG_0625

Then it reminds us once more that the day closes, the world turns, we are like little vapors, little tiny particles, but important enough to be here, and cognitive enough to know we have choices on how to be alive. I say, let’s live to the fullest! Be joyful every moment you can, the night falls on us all and we all must be in the dark at times. So when nature speaks to the soul, listen to the lessons it teaches. Be content, be blown away by the beauty in it and in each other. Let the darkness find you warmed by the memory of the sunrises and sunsets.

That’s my contemplative muse, take it or leave it and by all means leave a thought of your own!  I love to hear from you, out there under the same sky, different address to be sure.

My Coco Loco Machine!

Courtney TallaricoHave you ever just been so proud of your child that you cry? Well that’s me. I have been blessed with three amazing daughters who have become extraordinary women. Today was a day for the books with my oldest, and so it must be bookmarked by this blog!

My oldest daughter Courtney is one of the most amazing women I know. She has a heart of gold that holds out promise and hope for so many.  She is always giving, always sacrificing, and always taking a back seat to someone else who might need to go before her. It’s really incredible to see the woman she has become. Courtney has a man she loves and the two of them have two beautiful boys, one who is 2, and the other 1. They bought a home while she was pregnant with her first, and soon after that came the second.  These two boys steal my heart anytime I hear their voices, get their hugs or when we FaceTime together. But I digress, today I want to tell you about Courtney.

15380358_10103139981418879_2730196824966961486_n

Not only does she work full-time from home, juggling children, housework, cooking, cleaning, keeping up with friends, sisters, family and dog, but she makes sure that the people in her life know that they are loved and cared for. Courtney has a special way with words, and a certain tone in her voice to go with her silly antics when she is in a teasing mood. But one thing that she has not really had time for, as any 31 year old working mother can attest to, is she has had virtually no time for herself. Courtney set a goal for 2017 to run a half marathon. It’s amazing to me that she had any strength to do it because her boys rarely let her sleep through the night and her to do list is never checked off of all her responsibilities. But she started running again and was determined to push herself to check this quest off her bucket list.

In her own words she described to me how one of the hardest things for her is that the list never gets checked off completely. That desiring to do something for herself, for her own personal goals never seems to happen. So she set the bar high and signed up for a half marathon.

She drove to my place this morning and I drove her to Jamestown for the race. She was nervous and it was cold and windy and dark outside at 6:15 am, but she had a smile on her face. The race was to begin at 7am starting at Fort Getty. But even though she did not have much sleep she was ready to run. Her attitude was right, she just wanted to finish something that she started, not to be perfect or outdo herself, just finish the race. My heart swelled with pride as I heard her speak these words, and I was so proud of her.

We arrived and it was cold and blustery, people were all over the place getting ready to run and eventually she lined up with the crowd and off they went. I knew for the next two hours or so she would be running, and all I could think of was I hope she was happy, I knew she would finish. After and hour and a half I went to the finish line and waited for her and cheered on other runners as they came in. I watched the faces of those who were giving it their final push to get to the finish line and I saw so much in their faces. There was pain and agony in some, joy and relief in others, determination, striving, emotions galore! And my heart began to well up as I realized how much this meant to my daughter, how hard she had worked for it, how tired she was, but determined as the day began, and I felt the anxiety of anticipation start to fill my heart. And then I saw her, in the distance. I had just gotten off the phone with her sister Katrina, who with a toddler and a newborn at home was anxiously waiting to hear how Court did.

IMG_0075

And at the same time Whitney, her youngest sister was in Washington, D.C. on business, with the same anticipation. It was as if from 7am until we would see or hear from Courtney again, that the whole world was paused and we were imagining Court running, willing her to have the strength to finish well.  This may seem unusual to you, but to us, this is the very essence of family, that bond that feels what the other is feeling.

Courtney Tallarico: Sarah Hale Folger 1

And then the wonderful cheerleaders on the other side of the road from myself started cheering for Courtney as she came to the final steps and I watched her face beam with emotion.  I had been watching so many faces as they approached, but hers was unique. It was powerful to witness and to feel, the joy was palatable.  She’d done it, and done it in averaging 10 minutes a mile, which was fantastic!!

Courtney Tallarico: Sarah Hale Folger 2

What a moment the aftermath was, different for all the runners I’m sure, each with their own goals to achieve for their own reasons, but for Courtney, the feeling of finishing what she had set out to do for herself was overwhelmingly joyful. Some space inside her soul grew 10 times larger today, and I hope she can rest and enjoy this wonderful accomplishment for a long time.

Courtney Tallarico: Sarah Hale Folegr 5

I love you my little Coco Loco! You are a machine!!! May your story inspire all those other young kickass mothers who have almost forgotten what it feels like to have a personal goal. You rock my world, since the day you were born my life has never been the same. I Love you! You are a shining star!! XOXOXO!

My first visit with Philippe Lejeune, an artist and a visionary!

Sarah Hale Folger/ Philippe Lejeune/ Jackie Lee

I first discovered Philippe Lejeune by total chance.  I had completed a photo shoot with John Pitocco, (www.johnpitocco.com), and some photos were taken in front of a mostly demolished building in Providence, RI. Someone on Facebook pointed out that the artwork behind my photo was created by Philippe Lejeune.  So of course, fate has brought a meeting between us. (And I got the chance to meet Jackie Lee, she’s fabulous and up and coming in RI- more about her in another blog!)

Sarah Hale Folger/ John Pitocco/ Phillippe Lejeun

It is not over indulgent for me to mention that I am a true lover of trees and have drawn or painted many in my life.  Something always calls to me through the roots and branches of a tree that speaks to me as a human. I think for me it conjures up feelings of the past merging with the present and reaching for the future. Well, for Philippe, his passion for art led him to the painting of trees (with coffee by the way), and is now a calling which has led him on quite a journey.

Sarah Hale Folger/ Philippe Lejuene

Phillipe came from France to the US in 1984 with great aspirations as an illustrator for a highly successful designer. He did exactly that as he was producing etchings, and sometimes working for 3 months at a time on one illustration. Philippe soon grew tired of working to others specifications, longing to be truly free to express his art and soul through his work, he took a leap of faith and went to work for himself.

Sarah Hale Folger/ Philippe Lejuene

Not only did Philippe realize there was a whole other world out there artistically that he could participate in, but his hands and heart bonded while using his hands to create, in multiple medias, works that expressed his soul. One medium would run its course, then another would come alive. Sculpting and painting eventually turned to working with aluminum, where something in his soul was set to fire.  A door opened in his creative path towards working with wood to create trees.  (This story I want you to hear in his own words at another time.)

Sarah Hale Folger/ Philippe Lejuene

Philippe has gone through many exploratory stages of growth as an artist.  In fact, for me, I don’t think I have met an artist as diverse as he is in a while.  That sounds funny and curious doesn’t it?  Philippe pretty much always works with wood creating trees, how can that be diverse, you ask? Well, I gotta tell you, he has traveled on a path that crosses over the boundaries of one type of art to another so many times that he, in my estimation is one of the truest, purest forms of an artist I have seen.  He thinks like an artist about everything.  From detailed etchings, to painting, to sculpting with metal, glass and wood, to making amazing creatures in photoshop as well as designing on the computer, creating videos, and certainly, the art of conversation!

Whoa, we have a Renaissnce man in our midst folks.

If there is wood, and Philippe is there, you are bound to find even a building surrounded by trees. What is the story behind this man’s motivation.  This is a real obsession, a true calling.  He has answered the call.

Sarah Hale Folger/ Philippe Lejuene

Coming soon in Pawtucket is a cafe’/ gallery that Philippe is completely filling with his art.  There will also be live performances and more exhibiting artists as time rolls on.  I’ll make sure to announce the opening of this new cafe! Philippe and the owner have high hopes that they are creating a space for the arts, in many forms, music, fine art, and performance art, to thrive.

This environment suits someone like Philippe so well because, as he stated to me in our conversation, he is very inclined to disrupt the system.  He does not like how the internet is used in society.  Not only is this reflected in his work, but it is his desire to see this cafe/gallery break people free from the internet while they are in this cafe. Surrounded by other inspiring artists, people will come to be living in the moment, fully alive with the opportunity to thrive.

IMG_4898

Below in this photo you will see an installation made of individual shingles, each created separately then installed like shingles as a wall. I just let my eyes wash over this. I felt soothed by the rhythm I perceived.  It read like a book to me.  Only I followed the pattern row by row, starting from the left top row then going across to the end, dropping down a row and scanning right, dropping down and scanning left. All the way down then back up again, not too fast, not too slow. My eyes snaked fluidly over this work and it was exhilarating.  I wonder how your mind will process this work?  Won’t a conversation in a seat by this wall be interesting?  Or will you lose yourself in the repetition of the pattern and not think at all, just feel?  Will anything register at all?

IMG_4907

I really admire Philippe.  He lives totally and completely on the edge. That takes courage and vision of which he has both in abundance.

There is another project that Philippe has done using glass and it is fantastic! It is a work that inspires interaction and live performance art by anyone who gets involved with it.  There is much more to be inspired by with Philippe, and if you have questions feel free to ask.  Let’s keep this conversational rolling!!!

Ode to Barney Hale Folger

Sarah Hale Folger Barney Hale Folger

Today would have been my brother Barney’s 55th birthday.  This picture was the last time I saw him in Cincinnati in the late 90’s.  Barney was a photographer, jewelry designer and an actor and he worked other jobs as well landscaping and the restaurant business to name a few.

We were the youngest of 5 children, 4 brothers then me.  (Ted, Mike, Jeremy) Barney and I were Irish twins being born 1 year and 2 days apart.  We were inseparable as children, he was always having an adventure to take me on in the neighborhood.

IMG_4796

Our family ran a rehabilitation project for wildlife and this was a family portrait (one extra friend).  We had hundreds of animals in our home (thousands over the years) and on our property that we had rescued.  Barney seemed to be most involved when it came to the birds of prey, owls, hawks and others.

272794_4586496389901_723896768_o

Barney went to the Cincinnati Zoo school for gifted high school kids where he excelled working with the birds of prey. He worked alongside Steve Martin, the bird trainer for Hollywood, and eventually he moved to California for a while.

Barney with vulture

What we all loved the most about Barney was his storytelling ability.  His humor was off the charts and he would leave us all in stitches with one of his stand up comedy routines that he would perform regularly at the dining room table with family and friends.

IMG_4787

As much as Barney was a fun-loving guy he was also deeply intuitive with animals and would spend hours training birds.  I think he valued being alone with his own thoughts and being able to communicate with these beautiful creatures.

860115_10200858475013624_793354024_o-1

Barney was forever restless and he had a passion for travel.  He longed to go to Egypt to see the pyramids.  He was always on a quest to find more looking for the reason for existence and wondering where did we come from. He had a zest for life that is rarely seen.

IMG_4794

I remember the last time I spent talking to him before he left for Egypt.  He was so excited to go and see the world.  He once again gave me a philosophical conversation for the books.  It is that conversation that I hold on to the most as it was filled with hope and true excitement.  Of course the search for deeper meaning was a part of our conversation as well as talking about some of the hard times and difficulties of life.  I remember laying on my kitchen table with the cord to the telephone fully extended staring at the ceiling and talking about some deep stuff.  I was so happy we were having this conversation and couldn’t wait to see him someday when he returned.

IMG_4789

Barney was forever meeting new friends wherever he went is where the party started!

IMG_4788

I hope that during that time he felt his soul filling with some of the answers to his questions.

Barney Hale Folger

He traveled to many countries for 2 years.  Unfortunately he never did return.  He finished his time on earth in Laos.

But to me, he will always be my Irish Twin.  Always in my heart.

My Interview with Trumpeter Doug Woolverton: Video Included

This interview is the next installment in the Sarah Hale Folger Video Project. The SHF Video Project is a series of conversational interviews with extraordinary people in the arts & culture world, as well as the business world, and my goal is to bring wonderful stories of these interesting people to you.  My hope is to find where the magic comes from in these people, and to reveal it to you for inspiration for your lives, and of course mine.

I am pleased to present to you Mr. Doug Woolverton. Doug is a professional musician, composer, and band leader. Doug has been cultivating his smooth, soulful, yet energetic trumpet sound for audiences around the world becoming one of the most in demand, versatile trumpeters of his generation.

My team and I met with Doug at the Greenwich Odeum for a sit down conversation about Doug’s life as a musician. I asked Doug where his inspiration comes from and how he became a professional touring musician. In a world where many people would love the chance to be a full time professional artist or musician, but few actually endeavor to do so,  I wondered how he did it.

Doug reveals how he has pursued his passion and where he wants to go in the future. I am sure that the upcoming Miles Davis Tribute Concert, on September 16th at the Greenwich Odeum will delight audiences of all ages. If you would like to experience this magical night for yourself get your tickets today on the Odeum’s website. How to become an artist, Step 2

Sarah Hale Folger Insta5
I know it has been a while since I have followed up my last blog, “So you want to be an artist?” Well, the truth is, I’ve been extraordinarily busy taking my own advise and have carved out some space for one of my own art practices. This has been very invigorating. More about that another time!  In the meantime, I have been all over the place this last couple of weeks meeting with artists in the music and fine art world who have been bringing new and fresh energy into my world.  My creative juices have been flowing, and it’s an exciting thing to step back into the river with people who are artistically driven.  Some of the people I have been talking to are full time artists in various genres, some are dabblers, but all have a common thread.  All of those I have been rubbing shoulders with are aware they have a passion for art that they are committed to pursue. Below are a few observations I have found with people who are actually practicing their art.

1:  Practicing artists hang around with others who are actively practicing their art.  It’s one thing to have a desire to be involved in the art world, it’s another thing to take the step of committing a certain amount of free time hanging around people active in the genre you desire to be a part of.  It’s the principle of becoming like those you hang around with. Spending time viewing art, or listening to your art, then actually practicing it, is the way to motivate yourself.   Going to art exhibits, concerts, plays, recitals and absorbing the performances, will stimulate your own creativity.  It’s almost impossible to grow and develop your talent if you do not become part of the fabric.  Find your niche, and start relationships with similar people.  Community support goes a long way in fueling your fire.

2: Staying with the theme of community and expanding on it, consider joining an organization, whether for profit, a non-profit, or even a casual group of artists, a choir or any such thing.  In fact I would  go so far as to say, start your own group of hand picked individuals who can help you, and you them, to move towards your goal of practicing your art. Successful artists motivate each other.

3: Educate yourself.  I have mentioned before that youtube is fabulous for learning any art form. I suggest you watch as many videos as possible. But nothing beats hands on learning in the context of community. Take a class, become a member of a group that has education as a core value. People who enjoy their art do so because they are doing it often!

4. Practice, practice, practice. The time you spend practicing what you’ve learned or observed is the time you work the art into your soul. To be present with yourself is essential.  Time alone and dedicated to your craft is what makes you able to bring it out publicly and places you in context with others. Every successful practicing artist I know has space in their home, or at a studio, where they go to be alone and practice.

5. Step out of your comfort zone!  If painting, photography or sculpting is your thing, enter into some shows.  You can find venues in every town and every state. You may be able to find a local coffee shop, real estate office, bank etc., who would allow you to hang  your art in their facility.  Get it out there and let people respond to it.  Everyone is not going to love your work, so don’t let that stand in your way.  Be tenacious until you find a way to show your work. Every artist I know, I found because they are out there to be found!

6. Creativity is born through emotional, mental and spiritual convergence. Now of course, the more you do something the less anxiety you will have, because experience lays fear to rest, and builds confidence.  Every artist I know has suffered at times with anxiety, it comes with the process. The trick is to reinterpret the anxiety as energy and use it to your advantage. This just takes practice and you can overcome it.  Maintaining a balance of challenging yourself with something new (which can bring anxiety) while also developing what you have already established will help you overcome it.

I hope you have received encouragement from these common threads of successful artists and hobbyists that I have observed.  My next blog will actually be about a very accomplished musician, trumpeter Doug Woolverton.   I will be bringing you his story, sharing with you his successes, and I will give you a glimpse into his very exciting world on the stage.

As always, I welcome your comments and feedback.  Stay tuned, I will be introducing you to some really cool people. I leave you with this beautiful photo.  Let it inspire you to let the light of creativity shine on you! Cheers!
