Ode to Barney Hale Folger

Today would have been my brother Barney’s 55th birthday.  This picture was the last time I saw him in Cincinnati in the late 90’s.  Barney was a photographer, jewelry designer and an actor and he worked other jobs as well landscaping and the restaurant business to name a few.

We were the youngest of 5 children, 4 brothers then me.  (Ted, Mike, Jeremy) Barney and I were Irish twins being born 1 year and 2 days apart.  We were inseparable as children, he was always having an adventure to take me on in the neighborhood.

Our family ran a rehabilitation project for wildlife and this was a family portrait (one extra friend).  We had hundreds of animals in our home (thousands over the years) and on our property that we had rescued.  Barney seemed to be most involved when it came to the birds of prey, owls, hawks and others.

Barney went to the Cincinnati Zoo school for gifted high school kids where he excelled working with the birds of prey. He worked alongside Steve Martin, the bird trainer for Hollywood, and eventually he moved to California for a while.

What we all loved the most about Barney was his storytelling ability.  His humor was off the charts and he would leave us all in stitches with one of his stand up comedy routines that he would perform regularly at the dining room table with family and friends.

As much as Barney was a fun-loving guy he was also deeply intuitive with animals and would spend hours training birds.  I think he valued being alone with his own thoughts and being able to communicate with these beautiful creatures.

Barney was forever restless and he had a passion for travel.  He longed to go to Egypt to see the pyramids.  He was always on a quest to find more looking for the reason for existence and wondering where did we come from. He had a zest for life that is rarely seen.

IMG 4794 - Ode to Barney Hale Folger

I remember the last time I spent talking to him before he left for Egypt.  He was so excited to go and see the world.  He once again gave me a philosophical conversation for the books.  It is that conversation that I hold on to the most as it was filled with hope and true excitement.  Of course the search for deeper meaning was a part of our conversation as well as talking about some of the hard times and difficulties of life.  I remember laying on my kitchen table with the cord to the telephone fully extended staring at the ceiling and talking about some deep stuff.  I was so happy we were having this conversation and couldn’t wait to see him someday when he returned.

IMG 4789 - Ode to Barney Hale Folger

Barney was forever meeting new friends wherever he went is where the party started!

IMG 4788 - Ode to Barney Hale Folger

I hope that during that time he felt his soul filling with some of the answers to his questions.

IMG 4790 - Ode to Barney Hale Folger

He traveled to many countries for 2 years.  Unfortunately he never did return.  He finished his time on earth in Laos.

But to me, he will always be my Irish Twin.  Always in my heart.

My Interview with Trumpeter Doug Woolverton: Video Included

This interview is the next installment in the Sarah Hale Folger Video Project. The SHF Video Project is a series of conversational interviews with extraordinary people in the arts & culture world, as well as the business world, and my goal is to bring wonderful stories of these interesting people to you.  My hope is to find where the magic comes from in these people, and to reveal it to you for inspiration for your lives, and of course mine.

I am pleased to present to you Mr. Doug Woolverton. Doug is a professional musician, composer, and band leader. Doug has been cultivating his smooth, soulful, yet energetic trumpet sound for audiences around the world becoming one of the most in demand, versatile trumpeters of his generation.

My team and I met with Doug at the Greenwich Odeum for a sit down conversation about Doug’s life as a musician. I asked Doug where his inspiration comes from and how he became a professional touring musician. In a world where many people would love the chance to be a full time professional artist or musician, but few actually endeavor to do so,  I wondered how he did it.

Doug reveals how he has pursued his passion and where he wants to go in the future. I am sure that the upcoming Miles Davis Tribute Concert, on September 16th at the Greenwich Odeum will delight audiences of all ages. If you would like to experience this magical night for yourself get your tickets today on the Odeum’s website. My team and I will be there for an awesome behind the scenes look into Dougs’ tribute to Miles Davis.

I hope to see you there! If your reading this and end up at the show, let me know. I love to meet my followers.

Below is the video I did with Doug. Don’t forget to subscribe to my YouTube channel and Blog…Enjoy!

How to become an artist, Step 2

Sarah Hale Folger Insta5 - How to become an artist, Step 2
I know it has been a while since I have followed up my last blog, “So you want to be an artist?” Well, the truth is, I’ve been extraordinarily busy taking my own advise and have carved out some space for one of my own art practices. This has been very invigorating. More about that another time!  In the meantime, I have been all over the place this last couple of weeks meeting with artists in the music and fine art world who have been bringing new and fresh energy into my world.  My creative juices have been flowing, and it’s an exciting thing to step back into the river with people who are artistically driven.  Some of the people I have been talking to are full time artists in various genres, some are dabblers, but all have a common thread.  All of those I have been rubbing shoulders with are aware they have a passion for art that they are committed to pursue. Below are a few observations I have found with people who are actually practicing their art.

1:  Practicing artists hang around with others who are actively practicing their art.  It’s one thing to have a desire to be involved in the art world, it’s another thing to take the step of committing a certain amount of free time hanging around people active in the genre you desire to be a part of.  It’s the principle of becoming like those you hang around with. Spending time viewing art, or listening to your art, then actually practicing it, is the way to motivate yourself.   Going to art exhibits, concerts, plays, recitals and absorbing the performances, will stimulate your own creativity.  It’s almost impossible to grow and develop your talent if you do not become part of the fabric.  Find your niche, and start relationships with similar people.  Community support goes a long way in fueling your fire.

2: Staying with the theme of community and expanding on it, consider joining an organization, whether for profit, a non-profit, or even a casual group of artists, a choir or any such thing.  In fact I would  go so far as to say, start your own group of hand picked individuals who can help you, and you them, to move towards your goal of practicing your art. Successful artists motivate each other.

3: Educate yourself.  I have mentioned before that youtube is fabulous for learning any art form. I suggest you watch as many videos as possible. But nothing beats hands on learning in the context of community. Take a class, become a member of a group that has education as a core value. People who enjoy their art do so because they are doing it often!

4. Practice, practice, practice. The time you spend practicing what you’ve learned or observed is the time you work the art into your soul. To be present with yourself is essential.  Time alone and dedicated to your craft is what makes you able to bring it out publicly and places you in context with others. Every successful practicing artist I know has space in their home, or at a studio, where they go to be alone and practice.

5. Step out of your comfort zone!  If painting, photography or sculpting is your thing, enter into some shows.  You can find venues in every town and every state. You may be able to find a local coffee shop, real estate office, bank etc., who would allow you to hang  your art in their facility.  Get it out there and let people respond to it.  Everyone is not going to love your work, so don’t let that stand in your way.  Be tenacious until you find a way to show your work. Every artist I know, I found because they are out there to be found!

6. Creativity is born through emotional, mental and spiritual convergence. Now of course, the more you do something the less anxiety you will have, because experience lays fear to rest, and builds confidence.  Every artist I know has suffered at times with anxiety, it comes with the process. The trick is to reinterpret the anxiety as energy and use it to your advantage. This just takes practice and you can overcome it.  Maintaining a balance of challenging yourself with something new (which can bring anxiety) while also developing what you have already established will help you overcome it.

I hope you have received encouragement from these common threads of successful artists and hobbyists that I have observed.  My next blog will actually be about a very accomplished musician, trumpeter Doug Woolverton.   I will be bringing you his story, sharing with you his successes, and I will give you a glimpse into his very exciting world on the stage.

As always, I welcome your comments and feedback.  Stay tuned, I will be introducing you to some really cool people. I leave you with this beautiful photo.  Let it inspire you to let the light of creativity shine on you! Cheers!

So You Want To Be An Artist? Let’s Get Started! Step 1

graphicstock desk of an artist with lots of stationery objects studio shot on wooden background S0xwhBr6 b - So You Want To Be An Artist? Let's Get Started! Step 1

I was the Executive Director for nearly 6 years of a non-profit arts organization.  It was a membership based organization and we had anywhere from 12-16 shows per year as well as the largest fine arts festival in New England. Needless to say, I met hundreds and perhaps thousands of artists over the years. Prior to working in this non-profit, I worked for, for-profit art galleries as a tour guide in Providence for 7 years, and I got to know a few dozen gallery owners and the artists they represented.  Along with these two jobs, practicing my own art, and teaching, I came to understand the very real challenges of the creative individuals who embarked on producing their own art. Although I loved being around many accomplished and new and emerging artists, what I really was passionate about was the beginning artist. Over the years I was privileged to mentor many amazing people, helping them find their creative voice, and being one of the cheerleaders on their journey with developing their art.   As this series develops, I will share insights from my Executive Director days where I developed programs that inspired both artists and their followers. I value your feedback and welcome your comments and questions.

It is a powerful thing, the call of the soul to express itself.  As children we humans have no problem making mud pies, coloring outside of the lines and presenting a bouquet of weeds to our mom.  It is natural to want to respond to an emotion by creating something.  It is natural to want to show love to someone by giving them something beautiful or meaningful.  So what happens when you wake up one day and realize that someone you want to give a gift to is yourself?  And what if that gift is trying to learn and discover and grow your own talents?

DM 03242016 1839 - So You Want To Be An Artist? Let's Get Started! Step 1

It seems to me that once we become adults we have so many fears, that trying to push them back is like trying to put toothpaste back in the tube.  But is this really true?  Can we overcome self-judgment and the fear of failure to embark on a passion and just get started?  If that passion is to paint or sculpt or write or sing or any other creative thing it is important to investigate the reasons why we stop ourselves.

graphicstock silhouette of woman playing the harp isolated on white background HRZL9gJ3Wb - So You Want To Be An Artist? Let's Get Started! Step 1

Today I want to hone in on one thing.  I want to approach the person who longs deeply in their soul to paint, or play the piano, or practice some form of art, but is intimidated to get started.  First, I want to outline why most people don’t take the first step:

  1. FEAR: You are afraid it’s too late and you can never catch up and be great.  The human brain craves to learn new things, it’s what keeps us young in our minds. It’s seems so overwhelming because it is new and not tried and true.  Humans are creatures of habit, and if you are used to doing something, you are usually unafraid of it.  But the human ego is very guarded and does not like taking the risk of failure.  The ego wants to know it will succeed before it starts.  It knows what failure feels like and hates that pain.  Beginning to start practicing an art form can be daunting because the ego sees the end goal.  So the cure is to quiet the ego by reminding yourself that all you have to do is take the first step.  Pick up your art supplies or instrument and do the first lesson or doodle, keep it simple and slow.  If you think in terms of laying bricks to build a house, then you know you start by laying the first brick, then all the other bricks fall into place.  Every time you accomplish the next step you gain confidence and become less afraid.  The trick is to start in the head, learning and side-stepping and outsmarting your ego until your art becomes intuitive and fluid.
  2. VUlNERABILITY: Being a beginner can make you feel insecure.  We all had someone in our lives that cut us down somewhere along the way.  This is an opportunity to shut that voice in your head out forever. Also, remember there is no way that you can possibly be good at everything.  Just think of all the subjects you could have studied but didn’t.  You could live a thousand lifetimes and never know everything.  Try to think of learning something new as being given another chance at childhood, only this time you are older and wiser. You should be proud you are trying something that you always wanted to try.
  3. JUDGEMENTNo one wants to be compared to someone who is more accomplished.  Instead of letting this mind trick stop you, remember there is always something you have experience in that you do better than someone else.  You have to start somewhere and better now than later.  Take that negative energy of feeling judged, and let it motivate you to work hard to reach your goals.
  4. YOU DON’T KNOW WHERE TO START: Carve out a space for creativity in your home that does not have to be moved. Find the products you need to get started. Take a class, or watch youtube videos in the art form you desire. And remember be patient, there is no pressure to find instant success, just trust and enjoy the process. You may find it beneficial to find a local group of artists and join them, non-profits are great for this and they are located everywhere.   It is so much easier to be creative when you have like-minded accomplices. If music is your thing there are always open mic nights where you can meet people who love what you love.  For whatever you want to try, glass-blowing, pottery, metal work, whatever it is, trust me, there will always be someone to help you on your journey.
  5. YOU DON’T HAVE THE TIME:  If you want it bad enough you will make the time, try to make the time by cutting something out of your life like an hour or so of TV.  Sometimes it’s wise to get into a pattern, a routine of doing things at the same time everyday or on a specific day.   If you dedicate 30 minutes to an hour a day studying about your art or practicing it, the time adds up, and you will find that you are getting somewhere.

closeup of a mans hands strumming and electric acoustic guitar isolated over a white background SYE3gYAHo 1 - So You Want To Be An Artist? Let's Get Started! Step 1

These are just a few starting points to consider.  Was one of them your reason for putting off your desire to be an artist? Can you put that behind you now?

Sometimes the mystery that surrounds artists of all types causes people to think that artists have a secret power that they, the viewer, were simply not born with.  I could say the same thing about mathematicians, but the truth is, it’s all about repetition, practice, and of course your DNA can factor in for sure.  We all have limitations, so be realistic and happy every time you cross a milestone.  You will always get better if you practice.  Being creative and practicing art can make you happy, and we all want that.  So let me encourage you to start today.

You’ve got this!!! Go for it!!

This is Part 2, and the final video of my conversation with Umberto Crenca, Bert, from AS220.  One thing missing from my videos of my time spent with Bert, was our conversing about his music.  Bert and his wife and friends also like making music together in a group called Monkey Head.  While meandering around his music studio Bert played a couple of his instruments for us.  I am sure that if Bert and his band put some energy into it, and acquired some roadies, they will be back on track with their music.

LINKS TO THE VIDEOS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE

Hey Friends, as I stated in my last blog, once I got my video interview completed with Giovanni Feroce, I would create a video post for my subscribers. So here it is.

For those who don’t know Mr. Feroce, he was the past CEO of Alex and Ani, a very successful jewelry company based here in Rhode Island.  Under Feroce’s leadership, he took the company from a 2.2 million dollar company to $230,000,000.00 in three years, and now is the CEO of Benrus Corporation. For me, interviewing Mr. Feroce was a great experience, because after reading countless articles and watching interviews about his successes and failures, I still had no idea who he was, and that’s what I was seeking to know.  How did a man with such a humble background get to where he is today? To me, that’s real the story.

Not only did he prove to be engaging, attentive, and informative, he helped me learn about his upbringing, his family, and the traits necessary to possess in order to achieve success on a large scale. To all you budding entrepreneurs seeking to fly high, I promise you will get insights into his world that will help as you seek your own successes.

Sometimes we all need people to inspire us to dig deeper, and Giovanni does just that.   Thank you Giovanni for your generous contribution to my think tank, it will fuel me for a long time!

I’m also excited to see how his new venture Benrus.com will grow.  The fact that Giovanni intends to make his products tie to something meaningful is something I’ve always believe in. He is a sentimental guy, and it reflects in his strategy to take this company to new heights.

So as I always say after all my videos….Enjoy! Oh yea, please subscribe to my blog, my YouTube Page, and visit my website.

And while on my website, please check out my marketing page. We would love to work with you. Thanks! SHF

My Conversation with Entrepreneur, Giovanni Feroce.

This blog is a prelude to the upcoming video interview with Giovanni Feroce for the Sarah Hale Folger Project. Please subscribe to MY BLOG & Visit my website for updates at www.SarahHaleFolger.com

sarah hale folger giovanni feroce 1 - My Conversation with Entrepreneur, Giovanni Feroce.

I had an incredibly insightful conversation on a beautiful afternoon as I sat down for a one on one with Giovanni Feroce for The Sarah Hale Folger Project.  Like many people, I have read about his accomplishments and successes, especially in my home state of Rhode Island, where as the CEO of Alex & Ani, his leadership helped grow the company from $2.3 million in annual revenue to $230 million in 3 years.  I don’t know about you, but I wanted to get into the complex mind of Mr. Giovanni Feroce.

Feroce’s new venture as CEO of Benrus Corporation, which is a lifestyle brand with wristwatches as the core element, has drawn a lot of attention.  Where others saw only the decline of a once-dominant American manufacturing legend, Giovanni saw an opportunity. He purchased the BENRUS name and has transformed the company into a military-inspired lifestyle brand. However, Mr. Feroce has received some unfavorable press. Knowing that one way seems right until you hear the other side, I wanted to tap into that subject.  I wondered: how does someone like Giovanni Feroce navigate this media crisis, or any other crisis? Soon you will find out in his own words.

But there was so much more I wanted to know. How does someone become wildly successful? How does he mesh his military, political, and business skills together to achieve success?  I wanted the scoop on that!  So my first question was, Who is Giovanni Feroce?

sarah hale folger giovanni feroce 3 - My Conversation with Entrepreneur, Giovanni Feroce.

In my video interview coming out soon, you will hear personal stories from Giovanni about how he views the world from a business, political, military, and personal perspective. I believed this was a very honest and real glimpse into his life.

Personally, I am impressed by those who have the tenacity to go after their dreams and visions regardless of risk and whatever people might think.  Rhode Island has its share of movers and shakers, and Mr. Feroce certainly stands amongst them. Being somewhat of a strategic thinker myself, and having read many books on how military tactics translate into business practices, I found myself sitting with someone who has done this in real life, not just in theory.  I was eager to find out how having been in the military, as well as politics and business, formed Giovanni’s thinking. And you will find out in the upcoming video.

I am a big believer in the power of our thoughts and how they affect our own success or failure. What we believe we can or cannot do, determines if we will or will not succeed.  The ones who fearlessly press through life’s obstacles to achieve major success, therefore, are rare. In fact, it seems to me the majority of people will never risk leaving their comfort zone to try to reach for their dreams.  Something always seems to trip people up and they give up before they reach their goals.  I know, because I have done this to myself at times in my life. This is why I am so intrigued by someone who does not stop himself from moving forward towards success. What can we learn from this man’s life to inspire us to reach our own full potential?   It can be hard to relate to someone who does achieve his goals. Some may think it’s luck when someone meets with accomplishment. Nothing sums this up better than a quote from a book written by James Allen entitled As a Man Thinketh:

head 2360166 1920 - My Conversation with Entrepreneur, Giovanni Feroce.

“The thoughtless, the ignorant, and indolent, seeing only the apparent effects of things and not the things themselves, talk of law, of fortune, and chance. Seeing a man grow rich, they say, ‘How lucky he is!’ Observing another become intellectual they exclaim, ‘How highly favored he is!’ And noting the saintly character and wide influence of another, they remark, ‘How chance aids him at every turn!’ They don’t see the trials and failures and the struggles which these men have voluntarily encountered in order to gain their experience; have no knowledge of the sacrifices they have made, of the undaunted efforts they have put forth, of the faith they have exercised, that they might overcome the apparently insurmountable, and realize the vision of their heart. They do not know the darkness and the heart aches; they only see the light and the Joy, and they call it ‘luck’; do not see the longing arduous journey, but only behold the pleasant goal, and call it ‘good fortune’; do not understand the process, but only perceive the result, and call it ‘chance’.”

I think this quote, however harshly worded at first, speaks to the great sacrifices and hardships one must go through to be highly successful.  I suppose the good ones can make it look easy.

sarah hale folger giovanni feroce 8 e1497535500797 - My Conversation with Entrepreneur, Giovanni Feroce.

What I perceive to be the key ingredient to Giovanni’s success is his 100% RISK tolerance. Where most will assess and walk away, he accepts the challenge and has the strength to believe in himself to get the job done even if the stakes are high. Paraphrasing his words, “If I ever ended up with just a bottle of water and $7.00, I would be okay, I  would just move on and start over again.”

sarah hale folger giovanni feroce 7 - My Conversation with Entrepreneur, Giovanni Feroce.

Another thing I learned about Giovanni is that he mentors others in their personal quests.  I got the feeling from my own encounter with Giovanni, that I was just as important in my quests as he is with his own.  To me, that is respect and honor.

When the video comes out you will hear, in Mr. Feroce’s own words, his advice for entrepreneurs, learn of some of his personal insights into life, and you will hear how he navigates his own troubled waters dealing with the issues and concerns associated with his business life. It’s a true mark of an individual how he or she deals with the bumps in the road. Does he react or respond? You be the judge. For my part, I listened and learned.

sarah hale folger giovanni feroce 2 - My Conversation with Entrepreneur, Giovanni Feroce.

I feel as though there are few people in the world who actually get to be in a position to affect the world on a large scale.  I love it when those people take the time to share their knowledge with the rest of us.  It’s a true mark of good character to be a giver of time, and this was certainly the case with Mr. Feroce. I get the feeling that his love of his family, his love of his country, his ambition in business, and his undying passion to do whatever it takes no matter in good times or bad, has truly inspired me and will certainly be enlightening to you as well.  Be on the lookout for the up-coming video.

I’ll end this blog with words I have heard him share from an old professor of his:  Three questions you must ask yourself to get to the next level in achieving your life purpose:

  1. Who are you?
  2. What do you want to do with your life?
  3. Who do you want to do it with?

And he added another nugget, which you will have to wait to hear in the video!

This video is being created for my Sarah Hale Folger Project.  I will be having conversations with many interesting, inspiring people along the way and creating them into videos for my soon coming YouTube show.  The Sarah Hale Folger Project will seek to inspire greatness in humanity by sharing inspiring stories with the world. If you have a story that could inspire others if only it were told, please contact me through my website at http://www.SarahHaleFolger.com so that it may be considered.  If your story is chosen, I will feature you on my blog and YouTube channel as well as my website.  I look forward to hearing from you!

If you live in RI and are seeking a photographer I highly recommend John (http://www.johnpitocco.com/Welcome.html).  I have known him for 7 years and have had the pleasure of working with him on a number of projects.

The key to any successful shoot is first and foremost being comfortable in your own skin.  It’s important to have your head in the game and to enjoy the process.

It’s always great when you can work with someone who you feel comfortable with.  It’s not always possible especially if you are hired for a job and have never even met the photographer.  So once again, I find it is up to me to be in a happy place no matter who the photographer is.

Everyone sees the world differently.  It is up to me as a model to help bring about the vision of the shoot.  Every shoot should tell a story, every picture should have interesting value to it.

There is something special about Providence.  The history is rich, the culture is varied, and the hope of it’s future is in the hearts and minds of those who would take interest in preserving and enhancing it’s greatest features.

Fine art photographers have an eye for the beauty in the broken parts of a city.  Leave it to the artists to make something beautiful out of something that has fallen into rubble.

I am a woman who values my part in this state, in this community.  For my part I have almost entirely dedicated my life to my family and to the creative and performing arts.

I can remember when the city looked nothing like this. It’s up to those who love her to make her shine in the eyes of the world.  Rhode Island has many points of destination for visitors. South County and the beaches are spectacular and many come to spend time there.  But equally as important is the city of Providence, rich with it’s universities and museums, it’s restaurants and it’s night life.  Can anyone remember Providence without Waterfire?  It’s part of who we are now.

My hope is that many more of us will make our creative mark in this state.  It’s a very expensive state to live in for a variety of reasons, more so than almost any other state. This is the hard part on all of us, I am sure.  Lots to think about as I look through the photos and think of this place.

I am originally from Cincinnati and have lived in Colorado and Massachusetts and even a moment in Texas.  I have lived here now for more than 30 years, so I am officially a Rhode Islander. I love traveling but I love coming home as well.  And I enjoy the people I get to work with.  I think a lot of people I know have a vision for this state. I ponder all these things I do, and my many life experiences and I remain hopeful for the future.

A peek at my interview with RI Icon, Umberto (Bert) Crenca founder of AS220.

Who is Bert Crenca? He is an amazing man who has changed the culture in Providence for over 30 years.  Bert is an artist and also the founder of AS220, a non-profit arts organization located in Providence that has enriched the lives of many over the years.  The fascinating story of AS220 is currently being created into a documentary film and you can visit their website for more information on this ground breaking non-profit at https://as220.org/ But although we discussed Bert’s role in the creation of AS220, it was not the purpose of my interview. I wanted to hear much more, I wanted to hear the story of Bert’s life and what has made him become who he is.  I wanted to know what was coming next for him now that he has retired from AS200 leaving a legacy behind him.

I met Bert at his studio with my crew and we spent the better part of two hours just living in the moment while Bert shared his intimate thoughts on life, the role art plays in community, stories about his incredible life, and the time just flew by.  Bert’s heart was so big, and it had room for all of us.

I can’t wait until the video is edited and we get it up on my YouTube page (Sarah Hale Folger) As I told Bert, I am on my own new adventure and although I have several interviews lined up, I was hoping in my heart that he would be the first for my new video show “The Sarah Hale Folger Project.”  I have followed the story of AS220 for over 25 years and I have felt a kinship with Bert in so many ways as our paths were on similar tracts so often.  It only seemed right that someone whose work I have admired for so long should be my first interview for my new show.

It became apparent that Bert’s art will play a major role in his life moving forward.  Bert has won awards and been invited to the White House to speak based on his work at AS220. Bert has also given a TED Talk.  Here is the link to the YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tD-T4LIddtE

And there is another thing Bert and I share, our love for creating music. Bert has a group called Monkee Head which I hope to hear at some point soon!!

dsc07293 - A peek at my interview with RI Icon, Umberto (Bert) Crenca founder of AS220.

As we bounced around from room to room we ended up at Bert’s wife’s studio (her name is Susan Clausen) and she is just as creative as Bert and the two of them continue to be a dynamic duo in both the fine arts and through their music.

dsc07259 - A peek at my interview with RI Icon, Umberto (Bert) Crenca founder of AS220.

What I found most incredible about Bert was his humanity. Bert is a man trying to make a difference in the world and I believe he is succeeding.

dsc07289 - A peek at my interview with RI Icon, Umberto (Bert) Crenca founder of AS220.

Bert’s quest to create peace and harmony in a world gone mad is incredibly inspiring!

sarah hale folger with bert 8 - A peek at my interview with RI Icon, Umberto (Bert) Crenca founder of AS220.

In Bert’s retirement from AS220 one of his future quests is to take the time to showcase his art in a one man show somewhere in New England. Right now he is completing a series to go in downtown Providence.  With this series, Bert hopes to inspire people to hold on to the value of the human soul.  Bert also has a political side to him as an advocate for arts and culture.  His philosophical view of the world is ever striving to find ways to create space for people to be happy and free.

sarah hale folger with bert 7 - A peek at my interview with RI Icon, Umberto (Bert) Crenca founder of AS220.

We haven’t heard the last of Bert, in fact, this is a new beginning and I am pretty sure that even Bert has no idea what’s coming in his future.  Just like when he spoke out over 30 years ago in favor of artists having space to create and grow and thrive, I am sure that he will stumble upon something unexpected that will bring inspiration to many.

Mostly, for my part, I want to see his art speak.  He is a fighter for justice and freedom.  I hope karma gives back abundantly to him as he follows his heart.

Be on the look out for the video featuring Bert coming soon on the Sarah Hale Folger Project. www.SarahHaleFolger.com

Fun Model Shoot In Providence

sarah hale folger jp downtown 3 - Fun Model Shoot In Providence

I always love working with the talented Mr John Pitocco.  His shoot took us to downtown Providence where the possibilities were endless for photos.

But before I got started I stopped at Mary Janes Salon at 1270 Mineral Spring Ave. in North Providence where the lovely ladies both the owner and beautician Tori Chipman totally spruced me up for the event!  Thank you ladies for the incredible hospitality that this salon offers it’s clients!!!

Behind the lens of John Pitocco of Johnpitoccophotography.com we embarked on a fun-filled adventure walking the streets of Providence and seeing the world from an artists’ point of view.

I love this photo because it gives me a sense that an artist can still have a perspective that counts in a world where politics dictate so many outcomes. We the people, we have hearts that want to speak too, and in fact have wisdom and grace to offer.

Never neglect the eagle pose when the notion strikes to engage in it!  Balance and focus always win the day!

What a beautiful day in Providence.  Come on summer, we are all ready for you!

Choose today which way you will face.  Will it be towards the future?  Don’t look back! How fun it was to be in an empty parking garage, just hanging in the present.

At the end of it all it was a great fun day with lots of work done.  Providence has a special charm to it.  It’s a unique city which I am happy to live near.  So much potential.  It made me wonder where this city will be in 5 or 10 years, where will I be? For now, I am just happy to be here!

I would love to have you continue with me as I explore new topics and places and people. Please subscribe to my blog and follow me as I pursue my passions.
